The International Conference on Primary Health Care, Alma-Ata, USSR, 6-12 September 1978, defined primary healthcare as follows: "Primary health care is essential healthcare based on practical, scientifically sound, and socially acceptable methods and technology made universally accessible to individuals and families in the community through their full participation and at a cost that the community and country can afford to maintain at every stage of their development in the spirit of self-reliance and self determination".
The acronym MAPS stands for Modelo Adventista de Atencion Primaria de la Salud in Spanish, meaning Adventist Model of Primary Health Care. This initiative was developed by AHSIA in partnership with the University of Montemorelos. The objective of this model is to enhance primary healthcare development in InterAmerica by developping a comprehensive and community oriented approach of primary care that incorporates the principles of physical, mental, spiritual, and social health.
The graphic shows the MAPS model. This model of PHC establishes that the goal of the participant healthcare services is to carry out God's mission (which is shown by the capstone of the MAPS building). These organizations are required to establish their operations on the principles of AHSIA (which serve as the bedrock of the structure). And everyone involved must plan their work with the three pillars of the MAPS structure in mind.
1. The Mission to fulfil is to share Christ with all by demonstrating his love through compassionate health ministries interventions.
2. The 6 values of AHSIA are the following:
a. Responsibility,
b. Resiliency,
c. Accessibility,
d. Affordability,
e. Sustainability,
f. Security & Safety.
3. The three pillars are:
a. Provision of healthcare services based of the DREAM model of AHSIA,
b. Partnership building with the church entities and at local community level,
c. Networking with other MAPS participants at various levels.
As a result, AHSIA will execute three critical strategic initiatives in collaboration with the participating institutions for the period of 2025-2030.
